The lite mode or data saver mode tries to serve the compressed files via Google CDN cache which typically reduces the size of the website and improves the loading speed on the slow network connection. It also caches most website files on local storage that avoid redownloading the files from the server.
I personally keep the lite mode or data saver mode enabled in the chrome browser on my android phone. On average it helps me saving 0.5 to 1GB of data monthly since I mostly prefer web browsers rather than a native app.
I do not find any major difference while browsing off and on lite mode settings. Data saver mode is also useful when you’re offline or at a low-speed data connection. The website is loaded faster and lighter than usual making it quite a useful option.
