Why the “Report Broken Site” option is grayed out in Firefox
Firefox added the “Report Broken Site” menu item in Firefox version 123 so users can quickly flag pages that don’t render correctly to Mozilla’s web compatibility team. The report uploads as a Glean telemetry ping. That’s why Mozilla disables the option whenever uploading is turned off, locked by policy, or simply not possible.
If the menu entry appears gray and unclickable on your install, one of four things is happening. Technical data sending is disabled in your privacy settings.
The current tab is an internal page Firefox cannot report. An enterprise or profile policy has locked the underlying preference. Or you are running Tor Browser (or another hardened build) that intentionally removes the feature.
Quick check: confirm the current tab is a normal website
Firefox will never enable “Report Broken Site” on internal or restricted pages, even if every other setting is correct. The grayed-out state is the expected behavior here, not a bug.
Pages where the option is permanently disabled include:
- Built-in Firefox pages: about:newtab, about:preferences, about:config, about:addons, about:support.
- chrome: and view-source: URLs.
- The Mozilla start page and the Add-ons site.
- New Tab tiles, the Firefox home page, and any page opened from a Firefox system dialog.
- PDFs loaded in the built-in viewer and local file:// pages.
Switch to an actual website (an https:// URL of a normal domain) and reopen the hamburger menu. If the option is still gray, move to the next fix.
Turn on Firefox’s technical data sending
This is the single most common cause. The “Report Broken Site” upload piggybacks on the same telemetry pipeline that ships Firefox health data. Mozilla hides the menu when that pipeline is off.
Open the hamburger menu 
, choose Settings, then select Privacy & Security on the left. Scroll down to the section labeled Firefox Data Collection and Use and tick the box for Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla.
Behind the scenes this flips the preference datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled to true. You can confirm the change by opening about:glean in a new tab and checking that the Web Compatibility category shows uploads as enabled.
Firefox applies the new setting immediately, but the currently loaded page doesn’t re-evaluate the menu state until you reload it. Press (or + on Windows/Linux, + on macOS) on the tab you want to report, then reopen the hamburger menu. The option should now be clickable.
Check for an enterprise or profile policy lock
Some organizations deploy Firefox with policies that force technical data uploads to stay disabled. When the datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled preference is locked, Firefox grays out the toggle in Privacy & Security. The menu item never becomes available, no matter what you click.
To verify whether a policy is in play, open about:policies in a new tab. If the page lists any active policies, look for entries under DisableTelemetry or anything that mentions datareporting. A lock icon in about:config next to datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled (status set to locked) confirms the same thing.
For personal profiles this almost never happens. If you do see a lock, the cause is almost certainly a managed install. The only real fixes are talking to your IT administrator or creating a separate, unmanaged Firefox profile. Update Firefox to the latest version
Older Firefox builds had the menu in a different spot. Some 123.x point releases shipped with the underlying reporting feature partially disabled. Updating ensures you have the current menu layout (Help and Report) and the latest server-side upload changes.
- Open the Firefox browser app on your computer.
- Click on the More menu and select the Settings menu.
- Scroll down to the Firefox Updates section within the General tab, and click the button.
- Firefox will check for updates and download them. It may ask to restart to complete the installation of the update.
The browser will be updated to the latest version.
After Firefox restarts, revisit the page you wanted to report and check the hamburger menu again. On builds 155 and newer the path is Help and Report, then Report Broken Site. On older 123 to 154 builds the item sits directly under the hamburger menu.
Confirm you’re using standard Firefox (not Tor Browser or a hardened build)
Tor Browser intentionally disables the web compatibility reporting feature. Uploading any page metadata would conflict with its privacy model. The Tor Browser 15.0 release notes explicitly call this out: the menu item is disabled rather than hidden, which is exactly the grayed-out state users describe.
If the about dialog shows “Tor Browser” instead of “Mozilla Firefox”, or if you are using a privacy-hardened distribution (LibreWolf, Mull, etc.) that has stripped telemetry, the option will stay gray by design. The only fix is to switch to standard Firefox for the report, then return to your preferred browser afterward.
