Firefox bookmarks can vanish after a crash, a sync conflict, a profile refresh, or a hidden toolbar toggle. This guide walks through every practical way to bring them back on Firefox for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
You will learn how to restore from Firefox's automatic JSON snapshots in the Library, import a saved HTML or JSON export, find the bookmarkbackups folder in your profile, and pull bookmarks from another device through Firefox Sync.

Why Firefox bookmarks sometimes disappear
Bookmarks can vanish from Firefox for several reasons, and the fix you need depends on which one hit you. A sudden crash or forced shutdown can corrupt the bookmarks file.
A Firefox Refresh or reinstall may reset the profile. A sync conflict between devices can overwrite local data. A misbehaving extension can wipe saved sites. A corrupted profile folder causes the same symptom.
Sometimes your bookmarks were never deleted at all. The Bookmarks Toolbar may just be hidden, or you may have signed into a different Firefox profile than the one holding your saved sites. The steps below start with the easiest checks and move toward the heavier fixes.
Check if the Bookmarks Toolbar is just hidden
If your bookmarks vanish right after a Firefox update or a settings tweak, the Bookmarks Toolbar may have been toggled off rather than deleted.
- Press + + on Windows or Linux, or + + on macOS, to toggle the Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Look just below the address bar. If a row of bookmark icons reappears, your bookmarks were never missing.
- If the row is empty, right-click an empty spot on the toolbar and confirm that the Bookmarks Toolbar item is checked.
Once the toolbar is back, you can stop here. If it is still empty, move on to restoring from a backup.
Open the Firefox Library (Bookmark Manager)
The Library window holds every restore tool Firefox ships with. You will use it for almost every fix that follows.
- Click the hamburger menu
in the top-right corner of Firefox. - Select Bookmarks.
- Click Manage bookmarks. Firefox opens the Library in a new tab.
You’ll know it worked when the Library tab shows All Bookmarks, Bookmarks Toolbar, and Bookmarks Menu in its left sidebar. Keep this tab open while you work through the restore steps below.
Restore bookmarks from Firefox’s automatic backups
Firefox silently keeps up to 15 dated JSON snapshots of your bookmarks inside a folder called bookmarkbackups. Every restart, import, or major edit triggers a fresh snapshot. Even a recent loss usually has something to restore from.
- With the Library open, click Import and Backup in the top toolbar.
- Hover over Restore to open the submenu.
- Pick the most recent dated backup that still contains your bookmarks. Entries are listed newest first.
- Confirm the replacement prompt. Firefox overwrites the current bookmarks file with the snapshot.
TIP:
After the restore, reload any open Firefox tabs and check the Bookmarks Menu. Your folders and saved sites should be back.
Restore bookmarks from a saved HTML or JSON file
If you previously exported a backup yourself, you can pull it back in from anywhere on your computer.
- In the Library, click Import and Backup in the top toolbar.
- Choose Import Bookmarks from HTML… for an HTML export, or choose Restore then Choose File… for a JSON backup.
- Browse to the file. Firefox exports usually have names like bookmarks.html or a JSON snapshot from the bookmarkbackups folder.
- Select the file and click Open or Import.
HTML imports add the bookmarks to a folder called Bookmarks Menu on the Library sidebar, so you can move them around from there. JSON restores replace the current bookmarks file directly. To make your own backup before any changes, see our guide on exporting Firefox bookmarks on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Find your profile folder and check bookmarkbackups manually
If the Library’s Restore submenu is empty, the snapshots may still exist on disk. Firefox stores them inside the active profile folder.
- Type about:support in the address bar and press .
- Under Application Basics, find the row labeled Profile Folder on Windows or Profile Directory on macOS and Linux.
- Click Open Folder on Windows, or Open Directory on macOS and Linux.
- Open the bookmarkbackups folder inside the profile.
- Sort files by date modified. Look for bookmarks-backups entries whose filenames include a date and time.
- Copy the snapshot you want to a safe location like your Desktop.
The parent paths by platform are:
- Windows: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/
- Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/
Inside that path is a profile folder with a random name, and inside that folder is bookmarkbackups. Once you have copied a snapshot, return to the Library and use Import and Backup, then Restore, then Choose File… to load it back into Firefox. For the official steps, see Mozilla’s guide to recovering lost bookmarks.
A quick tip: clearing cookies and cache rarely touches bookmarks, but a corrupted cache can sometimes make the Library behave oddly. If the restore menu looks empty after a fresh crash, clearing the cache from Firefox’s settings and restarting the browser before reopening the Library can clear that up.
Pull bookmarks from another device with Firefox Sync
If you had Firefox Sync turned on before the loss, your bookmarks may still live on another device. Signing in pulls them back.
- On the affected computer, click the hamburger menu
and choose Sign in to Sync and save data. - Sign in with the Mozilla account used on the device that still has your bookmarks.
- Wait for the initial sync to complete. Tabs, history, and bookmarks will all merge in.
- Open the Library with + + (or + + on macOS) and confirm your folders are back.
If you never set Sync up before the loss, you will not have a remote copy to pull from. In that case, rely on automatic backups or a manual export. For a full walkthrough on enabling Sync, see our Firefox Sync setup guide.
Last resort: refresh Firefox
If every restore attempt leaves Firefox empty, a Refresh can rebuild a clean profile while keeping your data on hand. It resets settings and disables extensions, which sometimes unblocks a profile that has stopped loading its bookmarks correctly.
- Click the hamburger menu
, choose , then select . - On the Troubleshooting Information page, find the Give Firefox a Tune Up section on the right.
- Click Refresh Firefox and confirm by clicking in the dialog.
- Wait for Firefox to restart. Your bookmarks and logins are preserved, but extensions and most site settings are reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Firefox bookmarks disappear after a restart?
The most common cause is a crash or forced shutdown that corrupted the bookmarks file. Firefox rewrites that file on every restart, so a bad write can wipe the previous version before any snapshot is taken. Restoring from the next-oldest automatic backup in the Library usually brings them back.
How many automatic backups does Firefox keep?
Firefox keeps up to 15 dated JSON snapshots in the bookmarkbackups folder inside your profile. Older backups are rotated out automatically, and a new snapshot is created every time the bookmarks file is rewritten.
Can I restore bookmarks on Firefox for Android or iPhone?
The automatic backup restore tool lives in the desktop Library. On mobile, the only reliable way to bring bookmarks back is through Firefox Sync from another device that still has them, or by importing an HTML file exported from a desktop installation.
What is the difference between Ctrl+Shift+B and Ctrl+Shift+O?
+ + (or + + on macOS) only shows or hides the Bookmarks Toolbar. + + (or + + on macOS) opens the full Bookmark Manager, which is where the backup and restore tools live.
Where is the Firefox bookmarks file stored on disk?
The live bookmarks file is places.sqlite inside your active profile folder. Automatic JSON snapshots live next to it in bookmarkbackups, with filenames that include the date and time. Use about:support to open the profile folder quickly.
