Firefox stores bookmarks in the Library window. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+B, then right-click in the right pane and choose New Folder to add a folder under any parent.
You can also right-click directly on the Bookmarks Toolbar to create a folder without opening the Library. Both methods work the same way.
In this guide, I have covered:
Contents
Open the Firefox Library (Bookmarks Manager)
Every bookmark folder in Firefox lives inside a single window called the Library. That is where you create, rename, and rearrange folders, so open it first.
- Click the hamburger menu
in the top-right corner of Firefox. - Select Bookmarks.
- Click Manage bookmarks. Firefox opens the Library in a new tab.
Whichever path you take, you should see the Library window with a left pane that shows Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, and Other Bookmarks.
Create a New Folder in the Library
The Library is the easiest place to create folders in any parent location (Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, or Other Bookmarks) and to add a description.
- In the Library's left pane, click the parent folder the new folder should live inside, for example Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Right-click on an empty area of the right pane.
- Select New Folder from the context menu.
- Type a name in the Name field. Optionally add a description.
- Confirm the parent folder shown in the dialog.
- Click Add to create the folder.
TIP: You can also use the menu bar inside the Library window: click Organize, then New Folder. Same dialog, same result.
The new folder appears in the right pane and inside the parent you selected in the left pane. To control what Firefox shows each time you start the browser or open a new window, see the guide to choosing what opens in new Firefox windows and tabs.
Create a Folder Directly on the Bookmarks Toolbar
If the Bookmarks Toolbar is already visible, you do not need the Library for a quick folder.
- Right-click on an empty area of the Bookmarks Toolbar, not on an existing bookmark.
- Choose New Folder from the context menu.
- Type a name in the dialog and click Add.
TIP: The same New Folder choice is in the Bookmarks Menu list, and inside any folder’s drop-down on the toolbar. You can build a nested folder structure without ever opening the Library.
If you would rather pin a single site to the tile behind Firefox instead of building a folder of pages, see how to add a desktop shortcut for a website.
Show the Bookmarks Toolbar If It Is Hidden
Right-clicking the toolbar only works when the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible. If it is hidden, turn it on first.
- Press + + on Windows or Linux, or + + on macOS, to toggle the Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Look just below the address bar. If a row of bookmark icons reappears, your bookmarks were never missing.
- If the row is empty, right-click an empty spot on the toolbar and confirm that the Bookmarks Toolbar item is checked.
Once the toolbar is on, you should see an empty strip directly under the address bar, ready for new folders and bookmarks.
Move, Rename, or Delete a Folder
The same Library window handles cleanup. You can drag folders around, rename them, or remove ones you no longer need.
- Open the Library with + + (use instead of on macOS).
- In the left pane, click the folder you want to manage.
- Drag the folder up or down to reorder, or into another folder to nest it.
- To rename, right-click the folder and choose Rename, then type the new name.
- To delete, right-click the folder and choose Delete, then confirm.
Folders created this way stay on the local Firefox profile, and you can open any saved bookmark in a private window to test it without leaving traces. For the exact wording older Firefox versions used, see the Mozilla community thread on adding a folder to Firefox bookmarks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create bookmark folders from the Firefox address bar?
Firefox does not expose a New Folder button on the address bar. The two quickest paths are the Library ( + + ) and right-clicking the Bookmarks Toolbar. Both lead to the same New Folder option.
Why do older Firefox screenshots say Organize Bookmarks or Show All Bookmarks?
Firefox 3 and 4 used Organize Bookmarks and Show All Bookmarks. Modern Firefox uses the Library window, and the hamburger menu entry is now labeled Manage Bookmarks. The underlying folder system is the same, and bookmarks created in older Firefox still appear.
Can I create bookmark folders in Firefox on Android or iPhone?
Yes, but mobile Firefox uses a list-style bookmarks screen rather than the Library window described here. Folders you create on the computer sync to the phone once you sign in to the same Firefox account.
Where is the new folder saved by default?
Whichever parent folder you picked in the Library’s left pane (or the Bookmarks Toolbar if you right-clicked there) is where the new folder is created. There is no separate default location. Firefox uses the folder you selected.
What if right-clicking the toolbar does nothing?
That usually means the Bookmarks Toolbar is hidden. Click the hamburger menu
, then Bookmarks, then Bookmarks Toolbar to toggle it back on. Once the toolbar strip appears under the address bar, right-clicking its empty area reveals New Folder.
