Firefox opening in a reduced-size window can mean three different things: the window shrank, the page zoom is off, or the browser is stuck in full screen. They look alike and need different fixes.
Start with the zoom and full-screen checks, maximize the window, then delete the saved layout file if the smaller size returns every time you launch Firefox.
In this guide, I have covered:

Is the window small, or is the page zoomed?
You opened Firefox and got a cramped window instead of the one you left behind. Three things cause that look: the window itself shrank, the page zoom changed, or Firefox is stuck in full screen.
Work through them in that order. Zoom and full screen take seconds to undo, and the saved-layout reset is the heavier step you want last.
- Open a familiar website in Firefox.
- Look for the navigation buttons, such as Back and Reload, inside the Firefox window.
- If the whole browser interface is missing and only the page fills the display, jump to the full-screen fix below.
- If the interface is there but the text and images look unusually large, reset the page zoom next.
Reset the zoom on one website
Only one site looks wrong? That’s usually zoom, not window size. Firefox stores a zoom level per website, so a single page can stay enlarged long after every other fix lands.
- Open the affected website.
- Click the
menu. - Move to View.
- Move to Zoom.
- Select Reset Zoom.
You can also press + on Windows and Linux, or + on macOS. The page should return to its normal scale immediately.
Zoom sits alongside a site’s other permissions, so if a page keeps snapping back to a strange size, check the site information and settings panel in Firefox for that domain.
Mozilla’s Firefox keyboard shortcut reference confirms these zoom and window controls.
Leave full screen
Everything fills the display and your tabs have vanished? That’s full screen, not a small window. The mode can survive a restart, which is why people read it as a sizing bug.
In full screen the tab bar, navigation buttons, and parts of the address bar disappear, so Firefox looks thinner and oddly arranged.
- Move the pointer to the top of the screen to reveal the Firefox controls.
- Press .
- Check whether the tab bar and navigation toolbar are visible again.
If does nothing, open the
menu, go to View, and select Full Screen to turn the mode off.
Maximize the Firefox window
Not full screen, not zoomed, and the window still opens at half size? Now the window frame itself is the suspect. Maximize it, then close Firefox in that state.
- Double-click an empty area in the Firefox title bar.
- Move the pointer to a window edge and drag it outward if the double-click does not maximize the window.
- Close Firefox normally using the window’s Close button.
- Open Firefox again and check whether the window opens at the expected size.
You’ll know it worked when the reopened window shows the title bar, tab bar, and navigation toolbar, and fills the part of the screen you left it in.
Delete Firefox’s saved window layout
Some windows refuse to stay big. When the size resets at every launch, Firefox or the operating system is restoring a saved position and size. Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance points to xulstore.json, the file that stores toolbar and window layout information.
- Close every Firefox window.
- Open Firefox again.
- Click the
menu. - Open Help.
- Select More Troubleshooting Information to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page.
- Find the Profile Directory section and click .
- Delete the file named xulstore.json from the folder that opens.
- Close Firefox completely.
- Open Firefox again and check the window size.
Firefox writes a fresh layout file from the current window state. The Mozilla Support discussion of this window-sizing issue has more background on restoring the expected layout.
Deleting xulstore.json resets saved toolbar and window positions. Bookmarks, saved passwords, and history are not part of this file, though custom toolbar arrangements and window positions may need setting up again.
Test Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode
Does the window only misbehave after you install something new? An extension that rewrites pages or the browser’s interface can throw off zoom and window display. Troubleshoot Mode settles the question by starting Firefox with most extensions disabled.
- Click the hamburger menu
at the top right of Firefox. - Click Help.
- Select Troubleshoot Mode….
- Click Restart in the confirmation dialog.
You’ll know an extension is the cause if the window opens at the right size in Troubleshoot Mode and shrinks again once extensions are back on. Update or disable whatever was running before the problem appeared.
Still small? Go back to the layout reset above.
Reset Firefox settings if the small window keeps coming back
Small window plus other odd Firefox behavior? A settings reset is the next step, and it’s a bigger repair than anything above. Try the window, zoom, and full-screen fixes first.
Before that, open a fresh window and check its size. If you’re not sure which window you’re looking at, this walkthrough of private windows and new tabs in Firefox shows the difference.
If the small window survives all of it, follow the steps to reset Firefox’s browser settings, and treat that as the last option rather than the first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Firefox keep opening in a small window?
Firefox may be restoring a saved window size, sitting in full screen, or showing a site at a remembered zoom level. Reset the zoom and leave full screen first, then delete xulstore.json if the reduced size comes back after every restart.
How do I make Firefox open maximized?
Double-click an empty spot on the Firefox title bar, then close Firefox with the window’s Close button and reopen it. Firefox should come back at that larger size.
Will resetting Firefox zoom affect every website?
No. Reset Zoom and + change the current site only. Other sites keep their own remembered zoom until you reset those pages too.
Does deleting xulstore.json remove my bookmarks and passwords?
No. That file holds toolbar and window layout data, not bookmarks or saved passwords. Toolbar arrangements and window positions may return to their defaults.
Why does Firefox look smaller but still fill the screen?
That’s usually full screen, where the tab bar and navigation toolbar are hidden. Press to leave it and check whether the normal Firefox interface comes back.
