Safari does not reformat phone numbers on its own. It copies whatever sits on the contact card behind My Info, punctuation and country code included.
Pick the right card under Settings, Apps, Safari, and AutoFill, correct the number on that card, then retry the phone field using AutoFill Contact.

Why Safari fills in the wrong phone number format
You tap a phone field in Safari, AutoFill drops in a number, and the spacing or country code is not what the site expects. Nothing is broken. Safari copies the digits exactly as they sit on the contact card it has been told to use.
No Safari setting quietly reformats a phone number for you. The card wins every time.
So the job has three parts: fix the source card, confirm Safari points at that card, then test the field again. A one-off site with odd rules can also be handled mid-form.
Check the contact card AutoFill is using
Before editing anything, find out which card Safari is actually reading. Plenty of “Safari changed my number” reports turn out to be the wrong card selected, not the wrong digits.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then tap Safari.
- Tap AutoFill.
- Turn on Use Contact Info if it is off.
- Tap My Info.
- Select the contact card that contains the phone number you want Safari to fill.
From then on, tapping AutoFill on a webpage pulls details from the card you chose here. Apple’s iPhone User Guide on filling personal information in Safari walks through the same steps.
You’ll know it worked when the name under My Info is the person whose number you want filled.
Correct the phone number on My Card
The wrong number is usually your own, stored once and reused everywhere. Editing My Card fixes it at the source, because Safari reads that card the next time it fills a form.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap My Card near the top of the contacts list.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the phone number field and enter the number in your preferred format.
- Tap Done.
Strip what the form does not need: extra spaces, parentheses, dashes, a country code the site never asked for. If a website wants a domestic number, type it the way that website shows it instead of hunting for one universal format.
No My Card yet? Open Contacts, tap the plus
button to make one, then touch and hold the card and choose Make this My Card.
Update a different contact card
Sometimes the wrong number belongs to somebody else: a family member, a colleague, a second entry for you. Edit that card instead of overwriting My Card.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap the contact whose phone number needs changing.
- Tap Edit.
- Update the phone number field.
- Tap Done.
Need it for one form only? Tap AutoFill Contact above the keyboard, pick Other Contact, and choose the card you want. Your default My Info selection stays untouched.
Choose the correct number on a form
Some sites apply their own formatting rules and reject a number that looks perfectly fine in Contacts. Change the filled value before you submit and your saved cards stay as they are.
- Open the form in Safari and tap the phone number field.
- Tap AutoFill Contact above the keyboard.
- Select your preferred contact card.
- Tap the filled phone number field to edit it.
- Enter the required format and submit the form.
You’ll know it worked when the site accepts the number exactly as that site demands it. Safari has no global switch for phone punctuation, so a quick per-form edit is the honest answer here.
Check regional number formatting
Numbers looking wrong everywhere, in every app? Check the region before blaming Safari. This setting shapes regional formatting, but it does not rewrite the digits saved on a contact card.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Language & Region.
- Review the selected Region.
- Review the Number Format shown below the regional settings.
Pick the region that matches the numbers you actually dial. Then retest a form, because the card remains the direct source of what gets filled.
Changing the region does not rewrite every contact card on its own. Edit the relevant card if it still carries an old country code or an unwanted prefix.
Test the corrected AutoFill entry
Time to prove the fix. Use a test form that accepts a phone number without creating an account or placing an order.
- Return to Safari and open the test form.
- Tap the phone number field.
- Tap AutoFill Contact above the keyboard.
- Select the contact card you want to test.
- Confirm that the phone number appears in the expected format.
Still seeing the old value? Check My Info once more, confirm the edited card is selected, close the form, and retry. If AutoFill is also mangling street addresses, Add, Edit, and Manage Addresses for Autofill in Safari on iPhone & iPad follows the same repair path.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off Safari contact AutoFill?
Open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari, then AutoFill, and turn off Use Contact Info.
Why does Safari keep filling the old phone number?
Safari is probably reading a different contact card, or the edited card is no longer selected under My Info. Confirm the selection, close the form, and test again.
Can I choose a different contact for one Safari form?
Yes. Tap AutoFill Contact above the keyboard, choose Other Contact, and pick the card you want for that form.
Will changing Language & Region edit my contact cards?
No. The region setting affects regional formatting. The number stored on the card is still the direct source Safari fills from.
How do I change the format after Safari fills the phone field?
Tap the filled phone number field and edit it before you submit. That matches a website’s required format without touching the number in Contacts.
