Safari favorites can vanish after a major iOS update, usually because the iCloud Safari toggle gets stuck or your Apple Account signs out mid-update. Apple's bookmarks guide lists toggling iCloud Safari off and on as the first fix to try.
If that fails, icloud.com/recovery keeps deleted bookmarks recoverable for up to 30 days. A mismatched Apple ID, Screen Time restrictions, or full iCloud storage are the next common culprits.

Safari Favorites Disappeared After an iOS Update: Why It Happens
You installed the update, opened Safari, and the Favorites folder is empty. The Start Page tiles are gone too. Nothing you tap brings them back.
In iOS Safari, Favorites means the bookmarked sites pinned to the Start Page and listed at the top of the Bookmarks screen. It has nothing to do with the Favorites list in the Phone app.
The usual cause is the iCloud Safari toggle getting stuck while the update installs. Safari then reads from an empty local cache instead of pulling your bookmarks back down from iCloud. Apple’s bookmarks troubleshooting guide lists toggling that setting off and on as the first thing to check.
Other triggers look identical from the outside. Your Apple Account can sign out during the install, a second device signed into a different Apple ID can drain the sync pool, Screen Time can block Safari content, or a full iCloud account can stop mid-sync.
Confirm What Actually Disappeared
Two problems look the same on screen and need different fixes, so check which one you have before touching settings. That way you do not reset anything that was never broken.
- Open Safari and tap the bookmarks button (the open-book icon) at the bottom of the screen.
- Look at the Favorites folder and check whether it is empty or missing.
- Open a new tab to view the Start Page and check whether your favorite site tiles are gone.
- Open Settings → Apps → Safari and confirm Show Favorites is enabled.
If the Favorites folder still lists sites and only the Start Page tiles are gone, this is a visibility setting, not data loss. If the whole folder is empty, move on to the iCloud toggle below.
Sync that keeps stalling even after a toggle has its own causes, covered in Fix: Safari Bookmarks and Reading List Not Syncing.
Toggle iCloud Safari Sync Off and Back On
Your favorites are still sitting in iCloud, so the job is getting this device to read them again. That is exactly what this toggle does, and Apple recommends it as the first fix for bookmarks that stop syncing. It works most of the time.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap iCloud.
- Next to Saved to iCloud, tap See All.
- Turn the Safari toggle off.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Turn the Safari toggle back on.
You’ll know it worked when the Favorites folder fills back in, usually a minute or two after the toggle returns on. Open Safari, tap the bookmarks icon, and check the folder yourself.
TIP: Do this while connected to Wi-Fi. If your iCloud storage is nearly full, free up space first so the favorites archive can finish downloading.
Restore Deleted Favorites From iCloud.com Within 30 Days
If the toggle does not bring your favorites back, Apple keeps a 30-day recovery archive at iCloud.com. You can reach it from any browser, on any device.
- In a browser, go to icloud.com/recovery.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account that holds your Safari bookmarks.
- Complete two-factor authentication if asked.
- Under Recovery, select Restore Bookmarks.
- Choose the archive date you want to restore from the list.
- Tap to confirm.
After the restore finishes, reopen Safari and check the Favorites folder. If it is still empty, the note below explains the most likely reason.
If you see “No Bookmarks” under Restore Bookmarks, Safari was never turned on in iCloud on at least one of your devices, so no archive was created. Toggle iCloud Safari back on as shown in the previous step and wait for the archive to populate.
Check Screen Time Restrictions
Family Sharing and Screen Time can hide Safari content with no error message at all. It shows up most often on a child’s device, or on yours right after someone set a passcode.
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If the toggle is on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure Safari is enabled.
- Go back and tap Content Restrictions, then Web Content, and confirm Unrestricted Access is selected.
If Safari was disabled under Allowed Apps, switch it back on and open the Favorites folder again. Favorites hidden by a restriction return as soon as the restriction is lifted.
Verify the Same Apple Account on Every Device
Favorites sync only when every device signs into the same Apple Account with Safari enabled in iCloud. A mismatched Apple ID is a common reason favorites look missing when they are really syncing into a different account.
- On the iPhone or iPad missing favorites, open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Compare the Apple Account email with the one shown on your other Apple devices.
- If they differ, scroll down, tap , then sign back in with the correct account.
- Repeat on each Apple device until they all show the same Apple Account.
Once the Apple Account emails match, give Safari a few minutes to re-sync before you change anything else.
Make Sure Every Device Is on the Latest OS
Syncing gets flaky between devices running different OS versions, which is the exact situation right after a major release. If your Mac or another iPad is still on an older build, Safari data may not make the round trip.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install any pending updates.
- Repeat on your other Apple devices.
- Restart each device after the update and reopen Safari.
Apple rolls out major iOS updates in stages over the first day or two. If favorites are still missing a day after you toggle iCloud, wait for the rollout to finish before deciding the fix failed.
What to Try If Favorites Still Will Not Come Back
You have toggled iCloud, checked Screen Time, and matched your Apple Account. If favorites are still missing, these are the last-resort options, in order.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Force-quit Safari (swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe the Safari card up), then reopen it.
- Sign out of your Apple Account in Settings, restart the device, then sign back in.
- Check iCloud storage at Settings → your name → iCloud. If the bar is full, upgrade your plan or free up space.
- As a last resort, back up the device, then erase all content and settings and restore from your most recent iCloud or computer backup.
Erasing and restoring is genuinely the last resort for a reason. It only brings favorites back if you have a backup made before they disappeared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will toggling iCloud Safari off delete my favorites?
No. Turning the iCloud Safari toggle off only stops further syncing. It does not erase the bookmarks already stored in iCloud. When you turn the toggle back on, the device re-pulls the archive from iCloud.
How long does iCloud keep my deleted favorites?
Apple retains deleted Safari bookmarks in the iCloud recovery archive for 30 days. After that window, the archive is purged and recovery through iCloud.com is no longer possible.
Do Safari favorites sync between iPhone and Mac?
Yes, as long as both devices sign into the same Apple Account, both have Safari enabled in iCloud, and the system software is reasonably current. Apple’s iCloud Safari setup guide walks through enabling it on each device.
Why do my favorites keep disappearing after every iOS update?
The most common cause is the iCloud Safari toggle getting flipped off during the update. Signing out of your Apple Account mid-update, full iCloud storage, and Screen Time restrictions cause the same symptom. Repeating the iCloud toggle step after each major update usually clears it.
Can I recover favorites older than 30 days?
Not from iCloud. If you have a Mac with Time Machine backups, you can restore an older Safari bookmarks file from a backup taken before the favorites were deleted. Otherwise the only option left is to restore the iPhone or iPad from an older iCloud or computer backup.
