How to Disable Gemini in Chrome and Remove the Button

A Gemini button appeared at the top of Chrome after an update and there is no obvious way to remove it. It switches on by default when you sign in, so it feels like it came out of nowhere.

Here is how to turn it off on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook Plus, hide the tray or menu bar shortcut, and cut off the extra permissions. There is also a section for phones and work accounts where the toggle never shows up.

In this guide, I have covered:

What You Need Before the Gemini Toggle Shows Up

You have been through Settings and there is still no obvious way to make the Gemini button go away. Part of the reason: Gemini in Chrome is not an extension you can delete. It ships inside the browser as a button at the top of the window, a shortcut in the Windows system tray or the Mac menu bar, and a handful of permissions that stay on until you change them.

The settings toggle only appears once your account meets Google’s requirements, so run through this list first:

  • The latest version of Chrome on Mac, Windows, or Chromebook Plus.
  • A Google Account that is at least 13 years old, or the minimum age for your country.
  • A supported region and a supported device language set in Chrome.
  • A regular browsing window, signed in to a personal Google Account.

Miss one of these and you will spend an hour hunting for a setting that was never there.

Turn Off Gemini From Chrome Settings

You know the button is there. You just want it gone. Every Gemini control sits on one settings page, and the label moves around between Chrome builds (AI innovations on some, You and Google on others), so searching beats clicking through menus. Google’s Use Gemini in Chrome help page lists the same options.

  1. Open the vertical 3-dots icon menu in the top right of Chrome and choose Settings.
  2. Type Gemini into the settings search box at the top.
  3. Open Gemini in Chrome under AI innovations or You and Google, depending on your Chrome build.
  4. Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser.
  5. On Windows, also turn off Show Gemini in system tray and turn on keyboard shortcut.
  6. On Mac, also turn off Show Gemini in Mac menu bar and turn on keyboard shortcut.
  7. Close the tab. Chrome saves the change right away.

You’ll know it worked when you reload a page and the Gemini button no longer sits at the top of Chrome, with the tray or menu bar entry gone as well.

Unpin the Gemini Button From the Top of Chrome

Maybe the floating button is the only part of Gemini that bothers you. That one piece can go without opening Settings at all: right-click it.

  1. Move your cursor over the Gemini button at the top of Chrome.
  2. Right-click the button.
  3. Choose Unpin Gemini from the pop-up menu.

That hides the button and nothing more. The tray or menu bar shortcut, the keyboard shortcut, and the permissions stay on until you switch them off in Settings.

Open Gemini Settings Directly With a URL

If the settings label has moved again on your build, skip the menus entirely. A direct URL reaches the same page in any Chrome version where Gemini is enabled.

  1. Click the address bar at the top of Chrome.
  2. Type chrome://settings/ai and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Gemini in Chrome and open it.
  4. Toggle off the same preferences covered in the settings walkthrough above.

You can also use chrome://settings/ai/gemini to jump straight to the Gemini panel if your Chrome build exposes that subpage.

Disable Related Gemini Behaviors and Permissions

The button is gone, but Gemini still holds permissions that were switched on by default. Chrome keeps them separate from the visible toggle, covering the current tab, browsing on your behalf, and images or audio on the page.

  1. Return to Settings → AI innovations (or You and Google) → Gemini in Chrome.
  2. Scroll to the Permissions section.
  3. Turn off Share current tab by default so Gemini stops uploading the page you are on.
  4. Turn off Let Gemini browse for you if you do not want Gemini opening pages on your behalf.
  5. Open chrome://settings/ai/gemini and turn off Media understanding to stop Gemini from analyzing images and audio on the page.
  6. Revoke Precise location and Microphone if you do not want Gemini to use them.

Once those are off, reopen the page and every toggle in the Permissions section should still read off.

The Precious location and microphone toggles belong to Gemini, not to the sites you visit. If a site keeps asking where you are, that is a different control: the steps to enable or disable location access to sites in Chrome cover it.

Users under 18 cannot enable Microphone, Closed Captions, or auto browse. If those toggles are already grayed out, leave them off and do not try to force them on.

TIP: The pattern of switching built-in features off in Chrome settings applies to other helpers too. Our guide on enabling or disabling Live Captions in Chrome walks through a similar page.

Turn Off Gemini on a Work, School, or Child Account

If the toggles are grayed out, someone else controls them. On a managed work or school account, Gemini in Chrome is an admin decision, and a Google Family Link parent holds the same control over a child’s profile.

On a work or school computer

  1. Open Chrome and go to Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
  2. If the toggles are locked or grayed out, your admin has not enabled Gemini and no action is needed.
  3. If Gemini is on and the toggles are locked, ask your IT admin to turn it off through the Google Admin console.

For a child’s account with Family Link

  1. Open the Family Link app on your phone.
  2. Select your child’s account.
  3. Open the Controls tab and find Gemini in Chrome or a similar Google AI control.
  4. Turn off access for the child profile.

What to Do if the Gemini Option Is Missing

If you cannot find the toggle at all, the platform is usually the reason. The desktop control is not available everywhere, and Google is clear about where Gemini in Chrome runs.

On Android phones and tablets

Google’s official help page for Gemini in Chrome says the feature is not available on Android phones or tablets at this time. There is no in-app setting to disable, because the feature is not enabled there. Update Chrome from the Play Store if you still see a Gemini button, then check again.

On iPhone and iPad

Chrome on iOS does not expose the same Gemini in Chrome controls as the desktop build. AI features on iOS are tied to the regular Google app, not to Chrome settings. To turn Google’s AI features off on iOS, open the Google app and adjust Gemini there.

Other reasons the toggle may be missing

  • You are in a country where Gemini in Chrome has not launched yet.
  • Chrome is not set to a supported language.
  • Your Google Account is under 13 (or under the minimum age for your country).
  • You are signed in to a work or school account where the IT admin has blocked the feature.

If you are signed out, in an Incognito window, or using a managed profile, the Gemini settings page is hidden on purpose. Sign in to a personal account in a normal window, then try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions that come up most once the button is gone.

Is Gemini in Chrome available on Android or iPhone?

No. Google says Gemini in Chrome is not yet available on Android phones or tablets, and Chrome on iOS does not expose the same desktop controls. The toggle described above only appears on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook Plus in a signed-in personal profile.

How do I uninstall Gemini from Chrome?

You cannot uninstall Gemini, because it is built into Chrome rather than shipped as an extension. The only way to remove it is to turn off every Gemini preference in Chrome Settings, including the top-of-browser button, the system tray or menu bar shortcut, and the related permissions.

Will turning off Gemini delete my Google account?

No. Disabling Gemini in Chrome only affects what the in-browser AI helper can do. Your Google Account, your search history, and any chats you opened in the separate Gemini web app stay intact.

Do I need to be signed in to turn off Gemini?

Yes. The Gemini in Chrome settings only appear when you are signed in to a personal Google Account in a regular Chrome window, not in Incognito. Sign in first, then open the settings page.

Can I disable Gemini on a work or school Chromebook?

Only your IT admin can. The Gemini settings are grayed out on managed devices, so the only working path is to file a request with the admin team or use a personal Chrome profile.
