YouTube No Sound in Firefox? Fix Videos Playing Without Sound

When YouTube has no sound in Firefox, the cause is usually the browser's autoplay permission set to Block Audio. A muted tab, an extension, or corrupted YouTube cookies can also be responsible.

Work through the checklist in order. Start with the one-minute autoplay change, then test a private window, disable extensions, and clear YouTube data.

In this guide, I have covered:

Why YouTube Videos Have No Sound in Firefox

When YouTube plays silently in Firefox, the first place to look is the browser’s media autoplay policy. Mozilla Firefox ships with autoplay set to Block Audio by default, so a video can load without sound until you click the player or approve the site.

Other common causes include a muted tab, an ad blocker or privacy extension stripping the audio element, corrupted YouTube cookies, or the OS volume mixer sending audio to the wrong output. The fixes below cover all of these, starting with the autoplay setting because it is the most common culprit.

For background and workarounds from other users, see the original Firefox support thread on YouTube sound issues.

Quick Fixes to Try First

Before you change any Firefox settings, rule out the simplest causes. Most silent-video cases turn out to be a mute switch, not a broken profile.

  1. Look at the YouTube tab in the Firefox tab strip. If a speaker icon with a slash is showing, right-click the tab and choose Unmute Tab.
  2. Click inside the YouTube player. Check the speaker icon in the bottom right of the video controls, then press M on your keyboard to toggle the player mute.
  3. Open your OS volume mixer. Right-click the speaker in the Windows taskbar or click the speaker in the macOS menu bar, then confirm the Firefox slider is up and not muted.
  4. Play other audio in Firefox, such as a Spotify web tab or a local audio file. If everything is silent, the problem is Firefox-wide and not specific to YouTube.

If other audio works but YouTube stays silent, move to the autoplay fix next.

Allow YouTube to Play Sound in Firefox’s Autoplay Settings

Firefox usually stays silent because the default autoplay rule blocks audio on sites you have not approved. You can allow sound for every site or create a YouTube-only exception.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon at the top right of Firefox.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Privacy & Security in the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll down to the Permissions section.
  5. Click the Settings… button next to Autoplay.
  6. Open the Default for all websites drop-down. Select Allow Audio and Video if you want sound on every site.
  7. To allow only YouTube, leave the default as Block Audio. Scroll down in the same dialog to the site list, type youtube.com, and set its drop-down to Allow Audio and Video.
  8. Click Save Changes.
  9. Reload the YouTube tab and play a video.

Sound should now start without the click-to-unmute prompt. If you only want YouTube to autoplay sound, skip the global change in step 6 and use only the per-site exception from step 7.

The Autoplay change applies to the current tab right away, but reload YouTube with Ctrl+R so Firefox picks up the new permission.

TIP: You can also reach the Autoplay settings by typing about:preferences#privacy in the address bar and scrolling to the Permissions section.

Test in a Private Window

A Private Window skips your extensions and uses fresh cookies, so it isolates your main Firefox profile from the browser itself.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon at the top right of Firefox.
  2. Select New Private Window.
  3. Go to YouTube and play any video.

If sound works in the Private Window, an extension or stored data in your main profile is the problem. If it still stays silent, the issue is likely at the system or audio driver level, not Firefox.

Disable Extensions That Could Be Blocking Audio

Ad blockers such as uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, privacy tools like Privacy Badger and NoScript, and some download managers can interfere with YouTube’s audio element. Disabling them temporarily is the fastest way to test.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon and select Add-ons and themes.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Extensions.
  3. Use the blue toggle next to each extension to disable it. Start with ad blockers, tab managers, and any extension you installed in the past few weeks.
  4. Restart Firefox from the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon.
  5. Use Firefox normally for a few minutes, then check about:performance. If usage dropped sharply, re-enable extensions one by one to find the offender.

Reload YouTube after disabling. If sound returns, re-enable extensions one at a time to isolate the culprit. Then check that extension’s settings for a YouTube audio exception.

Clear Cookies and Cache for YouTube

Corrupted YouTube session data can leave the player loading without starting the audio track. Clearing cookies for the YouTube site forces a fresh login and leaves the rest of your browsing data untouched.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon at the top right of Firefox.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Privacy & Security in the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll to Cookies and Site Data and click Manage Data….
  5. Type youtube.com in the search box, select the matching entries, and click Remove Selected.
  6. Click Save Changes and confirm.
  7. Reload YouTube and sign in again.

Clearing YouTube cookies signs you out of YouTube and removes its local playback settings. Sign back in afterward. If you need the broader control, this section also manages your allow or block cookie rules.

For a full Firefox cookie and cache reset covering all sites, see our guide to clearing cookies and cache in Firefox.

Try Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode

Troubleshoot Mode restarts Firefox with extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration temporarily disabled. It rules all of those out in one step without changing your profile.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon at the top right of Firefox.
  2. Click Help.
  3. Select Troubleshoot Mode….
  4. Click Restart in the confirmation dialog.

Play a YouTube video in Troubleshoot Mode. If sound works there, an extension or graphics acceleration is the cause. Return to normal mode and narrow it down.

Refresh Firefox to Default Settings

When nothing else has worked, Refresh Firefox resets the profile to defaults while keeping bookmarks, passwords, and history. It is a good last browser-level step before reinstalling Firefox. For a manual equivalent, see our guide to resetting Firefox settings.

  1. Click the hamburger menu horizontal 3-bar icon, choose Help, then select More Troubleshooting Information.
  2. On the Troubleshooting Information page, find the Give Firefox a Tune Up section on the right.
  3. Click Refresh Firefox and confirm by clicking Refresh Firefox in the dialog.
  4. Wait for Firefox to restart. Your bookmarks and logins are preserved, but extensions and most site settings are reset.

After the refresh, return to the Autoplay settings above and allow YouTube sound again. Reinstall only the extensions you actually need, then test a video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Firefox block YouTube sound by default?

Firefox sets the media autoplay default to Block Audio so sites cannot surprise you with sound. YouTube needs a per-site exception before audio can start automatically.

Does this fix work for other video sites too?

Yes. Setting the default to Allow Audio and Video affects every site. To keep blocking elsewhere, leave the default as Block Audio and add youtube.com as a per-site exception in the same Autoplay dialog.

On Android, autoplay controls are separate. See how to configure media autoplay settings in Firefox on Android.

How do I know if a Firefox tab is muted?

Look at the tab strip. A muted tab shows a small speaker icon with a slash through it. Right-click the tab and choose Unmute Tab.

Will allowing autoplay for YouTube affect privacy or performance?

No. Allowing audio autoplay only removes the click-to-start requirement. It does not give YouTube extra data or change how Firefox handles trackers, so privacy and performance stay the same.

What if YouTube still has no sound after refreshing Firefox?

If YouTube is still silent after a refresh, the browser-level causes are covered. Move to the system: check the audio output device, the OS volume mixer, and any third-party audio drivers.
