Add, Edit, and Manage Addresses for Safari Autofill on Mac

Old addresses keep showing up in Safari forms because the contact cards behind them were never updated. The fix starts in Safari's AutoFill settings, not in the form itself.

Turn on contact autofill, open Contacts from the AutoFill pane, then add, correct, or clear the address on the card. Test it on a form field to confirm Safari offers the right one.

In this guide, I have covered:

Turn Contact Autofill On or Off

Safari won’t offer your address on a web form? Check this switch before you touch a contact card. Every address Safari autofills on a Mac comes from the Contacts app, and the AutoFill pane decides whether Safari can read those cards.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Settings… from the Safari menu.
  3. Select AutoFill in the Settings sidebar.
  4. Turn Using information from my contacts on or off.

Switch it on and Safari can fill names and addresses from your cards. Switch it off and contact autofill stops there, though the cards themselves stay untouched.

Safari stores payment cards in separate records. If checkout details need the same cleanup, manage the saved cards in Safari on Mac separately from your postal addresses.

Add an Address for Autofill

A new home, work, or delivery address stays invisible to Safari until it exists as a contact card. If a card for that person or company already exists, edit it instead of creating a second one.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Settings… from the Safari menu.
  3. Select AutoFill in the Settings sidebar.
  4. Confirm Using information from my contacts is turned on.
  5. Click Edit… to open Contacts.
  6. Click the plus plus add icon button to start a new contact card.
  7. Enter the contact’s name and full postal address in the card fields.
  8. Click Done to save the card.

Now go back to the form and click the address field. You’ll know it worked when the card you just saved appears in Safari’s suggestion list.

Edit a Saved Address

Wrong street, stale postal code, a city spelled two ways? Correct the card once and every form that uses it picks up the change.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Settings… from the Safari menu.
  3. Select AutoFill in the Settings sidebar.
  4. Confirm Using information from my contacts is turned on.
  5. Click Edit… to open Contacts.
  6. Select the contact or company card holding the address you want to change.
  7. Click Edit.
  8. Update the name or address fields with the correct details.
  9. Click Done to save the card.

Reload the page and click the address field again. The next time you select that card, the updated street, city, and postal details should appear in the form.

Delete a Saved Address

Moved house, or retired an old delivery address you never want to see again? Clear it from the card Safari reads so it drops out of your suggestions.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Settings… from the Safari menu.
  3. Select AutoFill in the Settings sidebar.
  4. Confirm Using information from my contacts is turned on.
  5. Click Edit… to open Contacts.
  6. Select the contact card that contains the old address.
  7. Click Edit.
  8. Clear the Address fields that you do not want Safari to fill.
  9. Click Done to save the updated card.

Reload the form and click the address field. The cleared address should be gone from the suggestions, and the rest of the card should still fill as before.

To remove the whole contact instead, use the delete action for its card in Contacts. Clearing only the unwanted address keeps the person or company card intact and stops that one address from being offered.

Use and Verify an Autofilled Address

A saved card only helps if it shows up when a form asks for it. Run the autofill flow once instead of retyping the same details by hand.

  1. Open a page with a name or address form.
  2. Click the relevant form field.
  3. Select the correct contact card from Safari’s suggestions.

Read the filled values before you submit. No card in the list usually means the contact AutoFill switch is off, or the card has no address details saved.

If you also use Safari on an iPhone or iPad, you can add and manage the addresses for autofill in Safari on iPhone and iPad so both devices offer the same cards.
