Your bookmarks are showing in Safari's sidebar, and you want them back in the menu bar. Nothing is actually broken. The Bookmarks menu stays at the top of the screen, and the sidebar is an extra view you can close in one click.
Hide the sidebar from the toolbar button or the Bookmarks menu, try the Favorites Bar if you prefer a strip under the address field, and if Safari keeps reopening the sidebar, test a private window and check your extensions.

Why your Safari bookmarks show up in the sidebar on Mac
Your bookmarks are sitting in a panel on the left of the Safari window, and the Bookmarks menu you normally use looks like it has vanished. Nothing is actually broken.
Safari on Mac shows your saved links in three places at once: the Bookmarks menu in the menu bar, the bookmarks sidebar, and the Favorites Bar tucked under the address field. All three read from the same list, so the sidebar appearing does not mean anything is stuck.
What usually happens is that the sidebar button in the toolbar gets clicked once, or Show Bookmarks gets picked from the Bookmarks menu, and the sidebar simply stays open. Safari reopens it on the next launch, which makes the menu look missing even though it never moved.
Apple’s Safari User Guide treats the Bookmarks menu as one of two primary surfaces (the sidebar is the other) and lists the Favorites Bar as a separate quick-access strip you can toggle on its own.
Hide the bookmarks sidebar on Mac
Closing the sidebar is the fastest way back to a menu-only setup. Safari only remembers the toggle while the sidebar is open, so the change is reversible at any time.
- Move the pointer to the top of the Safari window and click the sidebar
button in the toolbar. It sits just left of the navigation arrows, and the sidebar collapses as soon as you click. - Look at the macOS menu bar at the very top of the screen and confirm Bookmarks is visible between View and Window.
- Still seeing the sidebar? Open the Bookmarks menu and choose Hide Bookmarks. That is the same toggle, and it is handy when the toolbar button is hidden.
You’ll know it worked when the panel is gone and the Bookmarks menu still lists every saved link, organized in folders.
Sidebar visibility is a per-window setting, not a Safari-wide preference. Keep it closed in one window and you can still reopen it in another with Bookmarks → Show Bookmarks. The choice does not sync to other devices through iCloud.
Open bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu on Mac
With the sidebar hidden, the Bookmarks menu is where every saved URL lives. It sits in the macOS menu bar, so it stays one click away no matter which window is in front.
- Open Safari and look at the very top of the screen for the macOS menu bar.
- Click Bookmarks. In the default layout it sits between View and Window.
- Hover over Show Bookmarks to expand the folder list, then click the bookmark or folder you want. The Favorites folder is pinned at the top by default.
- To open a bookmark in a new tab, hold while clicking it. Add to send it to a background tab instead.
The menu opens instantly and stays in the same place across sessions, including the latest macOS releases. If you want one surface to depend on, this is the most stable one.
Use the Favorites Bar as a non-sidebar alternative
Want one-click access to the sites you use most without a panel sitting open on the left? The Favorites Bar is the surface to try. It lives just below the address field and is controlled from the View menu.
- Open Safari and move the pointer to the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- Click View, then click Show Favorites Bar.
- A horizontal strip of your favorite bookmarks appears below the address field, filled from anything saved to the Favorites folder.
- To turn it off again, choose Hide Favorites Bar from the View menu, or press ++ a second time.
When you save a new bookmark later, Safari drops it into the Favorites folder by default, so it lands on this strip automatically.
Once the strip appears under the address field, you have your quick access back without ever touching the sidebar.
TIP: The Favorites Bar does not replace the sidebar, but you can hide the sidebar entirely and still reach every bookmark from the Bookmarks menu, the Favorites Bar, or the Show Start Page grid under Safari → Settings → Homepage.
Other ways to reach your bookmarks on Mac
Sometimes the menu is not the fastest route. Safari has a few more entry points worth knowing about.
- Show Start Page: choose Bookmarks → Show Start Page to open a grid of favorites and frequently visited sites without keeping the sidebar open.
- Search Bookmarks: with the sidebar hidden, choose Bookmarks → Search Bookmarks (the same search field that sits at the top of the sidebar) to jump to any bookmark by name.
- Drag a URL onto the Bookmarks menu: drag a page’s URL from the address field onto the Bookmarks menu title, then pick a folder from the menu that opens.
What to try if Safari keeps reopening with the bookmarks sidebar
Closing the sidebar should be the end of it. If Safari brings it back on every launch, stuck session state or an extension is usually behind it. Work through these checks in order.
- Quit and reopen Safari with Safari → Quit Safari, then click the Safari icon in the Dock. Check that the Bookmarks menu still works and the sidebar is gone.
- Run View → Hide Bookmarks once more, then open a fresh window with + to clear the saved sidebar state.
- Test in a private window with ++. Private windows start without your saved session state, so if the sidebar stays closed here and the Bookmarks menu works, an extension is forcing it open. Disable extensions from Safari → Settings → Extensions.
- As a last resort, hold while launching Safari to reset the saved window layout. Your bookmarks sync from iCloud, so nothing is lost.
If the sidebar returns after all four steps, the saved window state was never the cause, and the extension list is where to keep looking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Safari keep opening with the bookmarks sidebar on?
Safari remembers the sidebar state per window. If the sidebar keeps coming back after you close it, a leftover extension or a stuck session file may be reopening it on launch. Disable extensions in Safari’s settings and test in a private window to confirm the cause.
Is there a setting to force the menu bar view in Safari on Mac?
No. Safari keeps the Bookmarks menu in the menu bar at all times, and the sidebar is just an additional view you can toggle on or off. There is no master switch that swaps one surface for the other.
Can I move a bookmark from the sidebar to the Favorites Bar?
Yes. Open the Bookmarks menu and choose Edit Bookmarks, then drag the entry from any folder into the Favorites folder at the top. Anything saved to Favorites shows up on the Favorites Bar once that strip is enabled from View → Show Favorites Bar.
Does hiding the sidebar delete my bookmarks?
No. Closing the sidebar only hides the view. Every bookmark stays in the Bookmarks menu, on the Favorites Bar, and in the Show Start Page grid.
To remove bookmarks permanently, use Bookmarks → Edit Bookmarks and delete them one at a time. Hiding the sidebar never touches your saved data, so you can bring it back with the same toggle whenever you want.
