Enable Dark or Light Theme in Chrome on Android

Are you looking to change the color and theme appearance in your Chrome on Android? Learn how to enable dark mode or light theme.

The Chrome browser for Android offers excellent accessibility and customization features. One such feature is the option to change the browser theme. It offers both dark mode and light mode appearance. We can switch the theme from the Appearance settings from the browser settings menu.

Customize Theme and Appearance on Chrome browser

Chrome for Android has the browser theme set to the system default. That means Chrome will automatically camouflage to dark skin if your phone is set to dark mode. If the phone’s skin is light, Chrome will be in the light. We can also choose the theme irrespective of the phone’s default settings.

The light theme has been there since the inception of browsers. Almost all the browsers defaulted to light or white skin until 2018 when the dark theme took away the limelight.

The difference between light and dark modes is in appearance and affects the battery performance. The light theme consumes more power for brightness than the dark theme.

I prefer to set the default to dark mode since it’s power consumption friendly and less affects the eyes.

The light theme or white theme has been since the incubation of the Chrome browser. If you do not like the Chrome dark mode, you can switch back to the light mode. Here are the steps to enable the light theme:

  1. Launch Google Chrome for Android.
  2. Tap on the Morevertical 3dots icon menu for options.
  3. Select Settings from the list.
  4. Tap on the Themes tab to open.
  5. Select the Light option radio button.

The dark or light theme can be chosen based on your preference. However, it’s said that dark mode saves battery life and reduces the strain on the eyes, especially in a dark room or at night time. Hence, dark mode is also known as Night mode.
