How to Reopen Recently Closed Tabs in Chrome on Android
Accidentally close a tab in Chrome on Android? The browser keeps a short list of your most recently closed tabs and lets you reopen one with a tap. You don’t need an extension. The list also includes tabs closed on other devices signed in to the same Google account.
There are three ways to reopen a closed tab in Chrome on Android. The Recent Tabs menu is fastest, the History screen reaches older pages, and the Search your tabs field inside the tab switcher covers recent Chrome versions. Tap any entry and Chrome loads the page.
Reopen Closed Tabs from the Recent Tabs Menu
The Recent Tabs screen is the quickest way to reopen something you just closed. It shows tabs you closed on the phone recently, plus tabs closed on other signed-in devices.
- Open the Chrome app on your Android phone.
- Tap the More menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Recent tabs from the list.
Chrome opens the Recently closed screen. - Tap the website link you want to reopen.
The page reloads in your browser.
If you’re signed in to Chrome on a computer with the same Google account, you’ll also see a section for tabs closed on that device.

Find Older Closed Pages in Your Browsing History
The Recent Tabs screen keeps only the last few closed tabs. For anything older, or to search by keyword, use the History screen.
- Open the Chrome app on your Android phone.
- Tap the More menu in the top-right corner.
- Select History from the list.
Chrome opens your browsing history. - Tap the page or URL you want to reopen.
The page opens in a new tab.
Use the search bar at the top of the History screen to look up a page by name or URL. That search bar isn’t available on the Recent Tabs screen, so History is the better choice when you can’t remember the exact URL.

Reopen Closed Tabs Through the Tab Switcher Search
Recent versions of Chrome for Android added a search field inside the tab switcher. It surfaces Recently closed tabs, tabs from your other devices, and tab groups in one place. If you keep many tabs open, this is often faster than digging through the More menu.
- Tap the Tabs icon (a small square with a number) next to the address bar.
- Tap the Search your tabs field at the top of the tab grid.
- Scroll to the Recently closed section, or type a keyword.
- Tap any result to reopen it.
The search also lists tabs open on your other signed-in devices, so you can reopen something from your computer without leaving the Android app.
What About Incognito and Synced Tabs?
Two edge cases come up often when people reopen closed tabs in Chrome on Android.
Incognito tabs can’t be restored. Chrome intentionally doesn’t save Incognito tabs to Recent Tabs or History. Once an Incognito tab is closed, it’s gone for that session. If you want to use Incognito alongside your normal tabs, see how to open an Incognito tab in Chrome on Android.
Synced tabs travel with you. When you’re signed in to Chrome with a Google account, tabs you close on your computer show up on your phone’s Recent Tabs and in the tab-switcher search under the From your devices section, and vice versa. To enable this, turn on Chrome sync on each device.

Can I reopen a tab I closed a long time ago?
Only if it’s still in your browsing history. The Recent Tabs screen keeps a short list. The History screen (More → History) keeps every page you’ve visited until you clear it. If you’ve cleared your history, that tab is gone.
Why don’t my closed Incognito tabs show up in Recent Tabs?
Chrome intentionally doesn’t record Incognito tabs in Recent Tabs or History. Once an Incognito tab is closed, it’s removed from that session and can’t be restored.
Do closed tabs on my computer show up on my Android phone?
Yes, when both devices are signed in to Chrome with the same Google account and sync is on. Closed tabs from each device appear in the other device’s Recent Tabs and in the tab-switcher search under From your devices.
Does this work the same on iPhone or in other Android browsers?
Chrome on iPhone and iPad has a similar Recent Tabs entry with slightly different menu labels. There was a “reopen tab” feature that used to appear at the bottom (I think, otherwise top) of chrome when I swiped away a tab. I could have sworn it was there in Feb, maybe even early March.
I open chrome without opening a tab I have 3 dots but there is only settings, new tab, incognito tab: nothing to access history or anything similar. Once I open a tab, there are no 3 dots.
Phone updated by itself, I postponed it, without a date do it wouldn’t update. But afterwards all my tabs were gone as well as a few other handy thing

I had over 100 tabs opened that had species of plants and random info that I was starting to make flash cards from. My 1 year old bumped my hand as I was on Chrome making my finger hit “Close all tabs”. I am absolutely baffled as to why Chrome doesn’t have 1) a confirmation saying “Do you really want to close all tabs?” 2) A temporary overlaying undo button after closing all tabs 3) A recently closed list that can be organized by date and time tabs were closed or opened 4) an open all recently closed tabs buttons with date and time parameters that can be set. Just unbelievable how much time and effort I just lost because of these COMMON SENSE features that area missing.
Hi, I can understand your frustration. However, you should consider using Chrome Bookmarks to remember the site links rather than keep them as tabs to avoid such mishaps again. It will be safe and synced across Google sign-in devices.

Well said. The chrome devs are absolute knuckle heads and this is a no brainer. Functionality exists on the desktop and you can even access these sessions in the default Chrome folder on desktop. Why these can’t be exposed is beyond me but I think I’m going to give up on browsing on my phone. The session functionality on Android is objectively inferior.
Well, neither of these helps if your Android Chrome crashes. I had numerous tabs, and tab groups, probably too many. And at one moment today it just closed. Reopening it showed just my ISP homepage, no other tabs. Recently closed empty. No recovery of any kind. And history… eh.. history… it shows tabs and websites I used today. Doesn’t show tab groups I last visited a month ago. How much I lost? Too much… hurts to even think. I know I should use bookmarks, but on mobile these aren’t as handy, and tab groups came as a perfect solution. Too bad it’s (obviously) unstable. I guess this is perfect timing to switch to – Edge.

There is a time limit where it no longer shows on android ‘recently closed’ tabs. For instance closing all tabs to reset chrome on android when they choose to enforce mandatory grid layout (where the flag for it is on ‘disabled’ and it still persists after resetting), with some tabs saved open for weeks ago but not visited, are NOT listed on ‘recent’
The Recent Closed is valid until the browsing session is active. Once you close the browser, it no longer displays the recently closed tabs. Instead, you can use the browser History to access closed tabs.
Also very frustrated by this. My thumb went a few pixels off the mark, and I forever lost some things I wanted to return to finish up.
