Chrome on Android keeps its dark and light theme controls inside a separate Appearance section in Settings. The path is More → Settings → Appearance → Theme, where you pick Dark, Light, or System default.
The change applies instantly on Chrome 145 and newer, so you can flip between dark and light without restarting the browser. System default follows your phone's dark mode schedule.

Enable Dark Mode in Chrome on Android
Chrome on Android keeps its theme controls in a separate Appearance section inside Settings. Pick Dark and the address bar, tab switcher, settings pages, and most visited sites turn near-black. Chrome stays dark even when your phone is set to light mode.
You need Chrome 143 or newer to see the new Appearance section. On Chrome 142 and older, the path is the older Settings → Themes route, which lands on the same options.
- Open Google Chrome on your Android phone.
- Tap the More
menu in the top-right corner and choose Settings. - Tap Appearance.
- Tap Theme (labeled Mode on Chrome 146 and newer).
- Select Dark.
Chrome applies the new theme right away. You’ll know it worked when the address bar, tab strip, and most page backgrounds switch to dark within a second.
Switch Chrome to Light Mode on Android
Light mode keeps Chrome with a white background and dark text. Switch to Light if you prefer the classic Chrome look, browse a lot in bright sunlight, or notice that a specific site renders awkwardly in dark mode.
- Open Google Chrome on your Android phone.
- Tap the More
menu and choose Settings. - Tap Appearance.
- Tap Theme (or Mode on Chrome 146+).
- Pick Light.
The theme flips back to white instantly. You can keep using Chrome in the foreground while the change takes effect.
Make Chrome Follow Your Phone’s Dark Mode
If you want Chrome to track your phone’s system dark mode setting rather than stay permanently dark or light, choose System default. Chrome will turn dark when your phone enters dark mode and back to light when your phone is in light mode.
The same approach works for the Chrome dark mode setting on a computer, so your phone and laptop can stay in sync.
- In Chrome, open More
→ Settings. - Tap Appearance.
- Tap Theme (or Mode on Chrome 146+).
- Select System default.
System default also covers any quick settings tile you have pinned for dark mode on your phone. Flipping the tile flips Chrome along with it.
Where to Find the Theme Setting
The Appearance section is part of the redesigned Chrome for Android Settings layout that started rolling out widely in March 2026. If you do not see Appearance when you open Settings, update Chrome from the Play Store. The new section shows up after the update installs and Chrome restarts once.
TIP: Older Android phones may still see Settings → Themes at the bottom of the Settings list. Both paths open the same Dark, Light, and System default options.
For related tweaks, see how to view site settings in Chrome on Android, and configure Chrome notifications on Android.
Want a private window in your chosen theme? Open an Incognito tab in Chrome on Android to keep the same dark or light skin without affecting your saved browsing data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to relaunch Chrome after changing the theme?
On Chrome 145 and newer, no. The new theme applies the moment you tap Dark, Light, or System default. On Chrome 144 and older, you may need to close and reopen the browser before the change takes effect.
Why does Chrome still show a light page after I picked Dark?
Some websites do not have a dark stylesheet, so they stay light even when Chrome is in Dark mode. Forcing those sites into Desktop view from the More
menu sometimes reveals a dark version. Most modern sites respect the browser’s color scheme on their own.
Can I schedule Chrome to switch themes automatically?
Chrome on Android does not have a built-in schedule for dark and light mode. Setting the theme to System default is the closest option, because your phone’s existing dark mode schedule then drives Chrome.
Where did the old “Themes” option in Chrome Settings go?
On Chrome 142 and older the path was Settings → Themes. From Chrome 143 onward, Google moved the same Dark, Light, and System default controls into a new Appearance section inside Settings.
Why does the address bar stay light even with Dark mode on?
An outdated Chrome build is the most common cause. Update Chrome from the Play Store and let the new version install. The chrome around the page should darken the next time you open the app.
